In life, there’s no such thing as free money.
Google is selling you to advertisers by knowing you better, and Pay/Tez makes sense because:
They know what you’re looking for (Google Search)
They know what you’re watching (YouTube)
They know where you’re going (Google Maps)
They know what you’re reading (Google Feed)
They know what you’re communicating (Google Mail)
One big gap is that Google doesn’t know what you’re spending on.
Google Pay will give them that answer as well.
Google’s way of doing business:
Make an Awesome product, dominate the market and then start making money.
Google launched their Search engine and they were not the first one and not the only one offering Search engine at that time, but they were the best. When other companies like Yahoo and AOL were busy monetizing their search business by placing ads all over their homepage Google kept their Homepage Clean and focused on making Google the best search engine and they did. After dominating the search engine market they started monetizing without affecting search engine. It still looks clean and inviting.
Old Google vs Old Yahoo!
When Android was new on the market there were already other players like Symbian being one of the largest. Then Google started giving away Android for free and many new as well as established companies adopted it and today we see Android is dominating the mobile operating system. Now they are making money from monetizing Android.
Google has massive war-chest of cash and they can afford to spend big on customer acquisition. Once they become the top dog in the game they will start monetizing Tez.
So rest assured Google is no Santa Clause giving away free goodies, they will start making big money on Tez too once they become the dominant/significant player.
Marketing strategy
Above figure is product lifecycle
- Introduction stage - The business model is quite simple. Instead of spending millions on advertising through digital media, they are gifting the cash backs to people. In return, it goes viral and reaches to the large set of the audience through the mouth publicity in a very short span of time.
- Growth stage - Once the users get used to this app, they will gradually decrease the offerings. Hence why people now are being offered less money than they used to be at the beginning of Google Tez launch.
- Maturity - Google pay is trying to get at this stage as soon as possible. Once they get the large set of audience, thereby many transactions then they may start charging a small fee for every transaction.
What we need to remember is that what OIL was a couple of years back is what YOUR DATA is now. It is a potential gold mine and the company who has the most concrete data will be the king of the jungle.
